SERIE NEGACIONES
(1971 - 1974)

NEGATIONS SERIES
(1971 - 1974)

"I titled the series Negations because my intention was to make paintings that would deny each other, and even deny myself as the author, that would depersonalise my work, a nonsense which, I don't know if fortunately for me, turned out to be unsuccessful. To accentuate the theme, I thought I could make a "collective" exhibition with forty paintings attributed to forty painters, but I dismissed the idea as I did not see myself capable of inventing forty names for these fake painters. In the end, the works were presented in a solo exhibition by a single author, under the title El cuaderno escolar de Vicente Rojo (Vicente Rojo's school notebook),  at the Museo Universitario de Ciencias y Arte. All these previous doubts and hesitations helped me to find a system of work which I have maintained, and which has kept me active, over many years: starting from a very rigid structure, within a strictly square form, which paradoxically allowed me to work with great freedom".
