SERIE NEGACIONES
(1971 - 1974)

"Llamé a la serie Negaciones porque mi intención era hacer cuadros que se negaran unos a otros, y que incluso me negaran a mí mismo como autor, que despersonalizaran mi trabajo, despropósito que, no sé si afortunadamente para mí, resultó fallido.
Para acentuar el tema pensé que podía hacer una exposición "colectiva" con cuarenta cuadros atribuidos a cuarenta pintores, pero deseché la idea al no verme capaz de inventar cuarenta nombres para esos fingidos pintores. Finalmente las obras se presentaron en una exposición individual y de un solo autor, con el título El cuaderno escolar de Vicente Rojo, en el Museo Universitario de Ciencias y Arte. Todas estas dudas y vacilaciones previas que me sirvieron para encontrar un sistema de trabajo que he mantenido, y que me ha mantenido activo, a lo largo de muchos años: partir de una estructura muy rígida, dentro de una forma estrictamente cuadrada, que paradójicamente me permitiera trabajar con gran libertad".

NEGATIONS SERIES
(1971 - 1974)

"I titled the series Negations because my intention was to make paintings that would deny each other, and even deny myself as the author, that would depersonalise my work, a nonsense which, I don't know if fortunately for me, turned out to be unsuccessful. To accentuate the theme, I thought I could make a "collective" exhibition with forty paintings attributed to forty painters, but I dismissed the idea as I did not see myself capable of inventing forty names for these fake painters. In the end, the works were presented in a solo exhibition by a single author, under the title El cuaderno escolar de Vicente Rojo (Vicente Rojo's school notebook),  at the Museo Universitario de Ciencias y Arte. All these previous doubts and hesitations helped me to find a system of work which I have maintained, and which has kept me active, over many years: starting from a very rigid structure, within a strictly square form, which paradoxically allowed me to work with great freedom".
