SOBRE EL AUTOR

Toni Catany fue un fotógrafo autodidacta conocido por sus imágenes pictorialistas en las que predominan temas clásicos como la naturaleza muerta, el desnudo y el paisaje urbano.

Se dio a conocer internacionalmente en 1979 con un trabajo fotográfico sobre naturalezas muertas en el que utilizó la antigua técnica del calotipo. Inventada por William Fox Talbot en 1839, es una de las primeras técnicas fotográficas de la historia y la primera que basó el proceso en la obtención de una imagen negativa de la que luego, por contacto, se obtenía un positivo. Esto provocaba que al copiar la imagen por contacto las propias fibras del papel se dibujasen en la imagen final.

Realizó más de un centenar de exposiciones individuales en todo el mundo. Entre las más emblemáticas destacan Toni Catany, l’artista en el seu paradís en el Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC) en el 2000 y la muestra póstuma D’anar i tornar en la Fundació La Pedrera en 2016.

En el 2002 publica dos libros, Dels qui escriuen con retratos de escritores catalanes y el PhotoBolsillo nº 45 Toni Catany, editado por La Fábrica. También destacan Record de Llucmajor, Liebana infinita, Venessia y Visions de Tirant lo Blanc. Recientemente se ha publicado una antología de sus fotografías en la colección PhotoLunwerg.

En 1991 recibió el título de caballero de la Orden de las Artes y las Letras, otorgado por el Ministerio de Cultura francés y, en 2001 fue premiado con el Premio Nacional de Fotografía y el Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas, otorgados respectivamente por el Ministerio de Cultura de España y la Generalitat de Catalunya.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Toni Catany was a self-taught photographer known for his Pictorialist images in which he focused on classic themes such as still life, nudity, and urban landscape.

He became internationally known in 1979 through a photographic work on still life in which he used the ancient calotype technique. Invented by William Fox Talbot in 1839, it is one of the first photographic techniques in history and the first to base the process on obtaining a negative image from which a positive was then obtained by contact. This meant that when the image was copied by contact, the fibers of the paper were drawn into the final image.

He held more than a hundred solo exhibitions all over the world. Among the most emblematic are Toni Catany, l'artista en el seu paradís at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC) in 2000 and the posthumous exhibition D'anar i tornar at the Fundació La Pedrera in 2016.

In 2002 he published two books, Dels qui escriuen with portraits of Catalan writers and PhotoBolsillo nº 45 Toni Catany, published by La Fábrica. Other publications include Record de Llucmajor, Liebana infinita, Venessia and Visions de Tirant lo Blanc. An anthology of his photographs has recently been published in the PhotoLunwerg collection.

In 1991 he received the title of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters, awarded by the French Ministry of Culture, and in 2001 he was awarded the National Photography Prize and the National Plastic Arts Prize, awarded respectively by the Spanish Ministry of Culture and the Generalitat de Catalunya.
