SOBRE EL AUTOR

Se inició en la fotografía después de su hospitalización a los 17 años, estudiando también de la mano del fotógrafo Pierre Astoux.

Villers manifiesta un carácter distintivo en su práctica artística. Eso ha sido posible tanto por su experimentación con una serie de elementos físicos y formales, como por su incesante fascinación por el juego de sombras, las transparencias y la dimensión escultórica de la fotografía.

En 1953 se encuentra fortuitamente con Pablo Picasso. Desde entonces empezó una fructuosa colaboración entre los dos, combinando las características de la pintura cubista y de la fotografía.

En 1962 publicó el libro Diurnes, con prólogo del poeta Jacques Prévert. Treinta láminas fueron seleccionadas entre unos setecientos fotogramas de máscaras, animales y estudios de figuras de grupo realizados entre 1954 y 1961. De esta experimentación surgió una síntesis sin precedentes entre la fotografía y la pintura, que abrirá nuevos caminos para un género cubista en la fotografía.

En su trabajo Villers nos permite descubrir el mundo más íntimo de los artistas, tomando instantáneas de muchos personajes relevantes del siglo XX como Simone de Beauvoir, Federico Fellini, Jean Cocteau, Le Corbusier y Salvador Dalí.

La mayor parte de la obra de Villers se encuentra en el Museo Nicéphore Niépce, Francia, así como en el Museo de la Fotografía de Charleroi, Bélgica.

Su obra se ha expuesto en toda Europa y forma parte de la colección del Museo Picasso de Barcelona y París. Además, la ciudad de Mougins homenajeó al fotógrafo con la creación del Museo de Fotografía André Villers.

He took up photography after his hospitalization at the age of 17, also studying under the photographer Pierre Astoux.

Villers manifests a distinctive character in his artistic practice through his experimentation with a series of physical and formal elements, as well as through his incessant fascination with the play of shadows, transparencies and the sculptural dimension of photography.

In 1953 he met Pablo Picasso by chance. Since then, a fruitful collaboration between both of them began, combining the characteristics of cubist painting and photography.

In 1962 he published the book Diurnes, with a foreword by the poet Jacques Prévert. Thirty plates were selected from seven hundred photograms of masks, animals and group figure studies made between 1954 and 1961. From this experimentation, an unprecedented synthesis between photography and painting emerged, opening a new path for a Cubist genre in photography.

In his work Villers allows us to discover the most intimate world of artists, taking snapshots of many relevant characters of the 20th century such as Simone de Beauvoir, Federico Fellini, Jean Cocteau, Le Corbusier and Salvador Dalí.

Most of Villers' work is held at the Musée Nicéphore Niépce, France, as well as the Musée de la Photographie de Charleroi, Belgium.

His work has been exhibited throughout Europe and is part of the collection of the Picasso Museum in Barcelona and Paris. In addition, the city of Mougins paid tribute to the photographer through the creation of the André Villers Museum of Photography.
