SOBRE EL AUTOR

Licenciado en Bellas Artes y académico de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. En 1958 se mudó a París y pintó durante unos meses en el taller de André Lhote. En 1962 obtuvo una beca para estudiar en la Universidad de Harvard.

Desde mediados de los años sesenta aborda la problemática de los últimos movimientos artísticos bajo una óptica personal y original en la que utiliza la fotografía como pintura. En 1970 obtuvo el primer gran reconocimiento a su trabajo, tras la presentación en la XXXV Bienal de Venecia, de los llamados encapsulados rosas. En 1973 recibe el premio Internacional de Pintura de la XII Bienal de Säo Paulo.

En esa misma década expuso en grandes museos europeos: Künstlerhaus, Viena, Heidelberg Kunstverein, Heidelberg, Palais des Beaux-Arts, Bruselas, Louisiana Museum, Humlebaek, Dinamarca, Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam, Stadt Museum Bochum, Bochum, Alemania, Frankfurter Kunstverein, Francfort, Sonja Henie-Niels Onstand Foundation, Hovikooden, Noruega.

En 1983 recibió en España el premio Nacional de Pintura. A lo largo de ese periodo participó en muestras individuales y colectivas por EEUU: en Charles Cowles Gallery en 1982, en el Guggenheim en 1980 New Images from Spain, en 1983 Acquisition Priorities: Aspects of Postwar Painting in América. Recent European Painting y en el MOMA en 1984, An International Survey of Recent painting and Sculpture. Mientras que en 1987 forma parte de la exposición Cinq siècles d’Art Espagnol: l’imagination nouvelle. Les années 70-80 en el Museo de Arte Moderno de París.

En 1994 el Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno organizó una exposición antológica de su trabajo, que un poco más tarde se presentó en el Museo Nacional de Arte contemporáneo de Oslo.

El 17 de noviembre de 2002 ingresó como miembro a la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. En 2003 recibió la Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes en Granada.

En 2007 el MNCARS realizó una importante retrospectiva de su obra, desde 1957 a 2007.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Graduated in Fine Arts and member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. In 1958 he moved to Paris and painted for a few months in André Lhote's studio. In 1962 he obtained a scholarship to study at Harvard University.

Since the mid-sixties, he dealt with the problems of the latest artistic movements from a personal and original perspective, using photography as a means of painting. In 1970 he obtained the first major recognition of his work, after the presentation at the XXXV Venice Biennale of the so called pink encapsulated. In 1973 he received the International Painting Prize at the XII Biennial of São Paulo.

In the same decade he exhibited in major European museums: Künstlerhaus, Vienna, Heidelberg Kunstverein, Heidelberg, Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, Louisiana Museum, Humlebaek, Denmark, Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam, Stadt Museum Bochum, Bochum, Germany, Frankfurter Kunstverein, Frankfurt, Sonja Henie-Niels Onstand Foundation, Hovikooden, Norway.

In 1983 he received the National Painting Prize in Spain. During this period he participated in solo and group exhibitions in the USA: at Charles Cowles Gallery in 1982, at the Guggenheim in 1980, New Images from Spain, in 1983, Acquisition Priorities: Aspects of Postwar Painting in America. In 1994 the Valencian Institute of Modern Art organised an anthological exhibition of his work, which was later presented at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Oslo.

On 17 November 2002 he became a member of the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts. In 2003 he received the Gold Medal of Merit in Fine Arts in Granada.

In 2007 the MNCARS held an important retrospective of his work, from 1957 to 2007.
